What “producing at a loss” really means<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Producing at a loss does not necessarily mean going bankrupt. In market gardening, it can mean growing a plot of cherry tomatoes for 6 months only to realise that the margin generated does not cover the hours spent working on it. Or investing in seeds and transplants for a crop whose yield was overestimated by 40%.<\/p>\n

According to INRAE<\/a>, profitability in diversified market gardening is structurally fragile: gross margins vary considerably from one crop to another, and without precise tracking of production costs it is almost impossible to identify the crops that are dragging the farm down.<\/p>\n
